CASA DAS QUATRO CASAS
The Portuguese studio PROD Arquitectura + Design married tradition and modernity to create this house located in Penafiel, in northern Portugal. The clients wanted a house brimming with natural light that perfectly blended into the surrounding environment. The architects’ solution was to design a cluster of four individual ‘houses’, each with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows on one side. Granite was used for the foundation, zinc for the roof, and Scandinavian pine for the exterior cladding. The design echoes the structure of an old building on the site. The main entry is on the south-facing side of the house and leads to a central hallway from which all four separate sections of the home are accessible.
The glass wall of the living area opens the space to the outdoors. The central suspended Gyrofocus fireplace enhances the contemporary style of the interior and allows the owners to enjoy the warmth of a fire while taking in the view of the nature outside.
